What is Americana style?

Americana style captures a sense of nostalgia, comfort and character, blending vintage influences with a relaxed, lived-in feel. Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the United States, it draws on Palm Springs glamour, classic Hollywood, Western flair and more. It’s a cultural aesthetic that continues to capture global attention, from music to major events like the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

It’s a look that celebrates individuality, storytelling and a playful mix of old and new.

Where did Americana style come from?

Over time, music, film and fashion have continually reinterpreted the look, helping to evolve it into the nostalgic style we all love.

Today, it’s growing in popularity as more people move towards expressive interiors that balance retro charm with comfort, creating relaxed, layered spaces full of character.

1. Create a warm, cosy colour palette

Colour is key to achieving the Americana look, setting the tone for a space that feels comforting and characterful. Start with deep, earthy tones like warm tans, rich caramel, dark grey or navy to create a welcoming foundation.

For a pop of Palm Springs playfulness, introduce brighter pastel shades through rugs, blinds, artwork or accessories. Next, build in warmth by layering throws, quilts and cushions in a mix of fabrics, and combine patterned and plain textiles for a look that feels effortlessly pulled together.

Bookshelves filled with books and decor flank a cozy bedroom. A green bedspread covers the bed, near a window with patterned blinds overlooking a garden. A plant hangs from the shelf.

2. Bring in a touch of nature

Americana interiors often blur the line between indoors and outdoors, combining natural materials with greenery to create a relaxed feel. Start with darker woods like oak, walnut and ebony to build warmth and a subtle rustic edge, then choose furniture with tactile finishes to add contrast and visual interest.

To soften the look, bring in greenery through cacti, succulents and larger leafy plants like monstera, echoing the laid-back, desert-inspired feel of Palm Springs interiors. Window dressings like the Tottenham Dalmatian Ginger Roman blind complement this beautifully, with its animal print adding a playful detail. Together, these elements create a space that feels inviting and connected to the outdoors.

  • "Americana is like living in a Hollywood movie, a romanticised version. It’s that little slice of Palm Springs and cowboy kitsch. It’s all about having fun."

3. Introduce bold prints and playful patterns

One of the most recognisable elements of Americana style is its use of pattern, bringing energy, charm and playfulness into the space. Classic motifs like stars and stripes sit alongside gingham, checks, palm leaves and geometric prints, all of which help create a fun, characterful look.

Introduce these patterns through curtains or Roman blinds, cushions, throws or a statement wallpaper.

These Portofino Stripe Olive curtains from our Jonathan Adler collection are a great way to add pattern. Look to bold shades like reds, greens, yellows and soft pinks to lift the space, or opt for muted tones for a softer finish.

4. Embrace vintage and nostalgic décor

At the heart of Americana style is a sense of nostalgia, celebrating heritage, craftsmanship and pieces with a story to tell. Achieve this look by incorporating vintage and pre-loved finds. Explore charity shops, flea markets or car boot sales for unique treasures, from mid-century furniture and glassware to antique ornaments and old books that instantly add character.

Focus on creating a layered feel, mixing dark finishes with distressed artwork, soft leather accents and handmade details to build warmth. This Wyndham's Rattan Sepia Roman blind adds subtle texture and a natural, woven look that complements vintage-inspired schemes. Style your pieces in relaxed groupings, stacking books, clustering accessories and mixing heights, for a space that feels personal and full of charm.

5. Start small with statement pieces

If you’re new to the Americana look, don’t feel like you need to transform your entire home at once. Introduce the look by starting with a statement piece that brings personality and impact to your space. This could be anything from bold Roman blinds or patterned curtains to an eye-catching piece of furniture or a tall cactus.

Our Poodle & Blonde range is perfect for adding a playful, retro-inspired touch, while our Jonathan Adler collection offers bold, modern designs that still capture the distinctive Americana spirit.

How to make Americana style your own

The beauty of Americana style is that there are no strict rules, it’s all about creating a home that feels personal, relaxed and full of character. Mix different eras, combine vintage finds with modern pieces, and don’t be afraid to experiment with colour, pattern and texture to tell your own story.

Start small, have fun with it, and gradually layer in more pieces to create a look that feels uniquely yours.
