What is quirky home décor?

Quirky home décor is all about creating a space that feels unique and expressive. Moving away from safe, minimal interiors and towards something personal and full of life.  It’s a chance to be more adventurous, mixing prints, colours and styles that aren’t an obvious match, but still feel balanced.

There are no strict rules, that’s the joy of it. Whether you’re starting with a few quirky home accessories or transforming your entire room, it’s all about creating a space that spark joy and character.

A plush green sofa with cushions sits on a patterned rug in a bright room. Large windows with floral curtains overlook a lush garden. Art decorates the walls.

The Poodle & Blonde way

Poodle & Blonde bring quirky home décor to life beautifully. At the heart of their designs is storytelling. Every Roman blind or curtain fabric from the collection starts with a memory, a moment or a fun concept brought to life through pattern and colour.

Retro design plays a big role too, with strong influences from the 60s and 70s running throughout the collection. These references are reimagined in a fresh, modern way, making them easy to style and live with.

"We love that every fabric in this collection either contains cotton sourced as better cotton, recycled polyester or more sustainably sourced viscose."

Kierra Campbell - Managing Director at Poodle & Blonde

Bookshelves filled with books and decor flank a cozy bedroom. A green bedspread covers the bed, near a window with patterned blinds overlooking a garden. A plant hangs from the shelf.

1. Dalmatian inspired fabric

Tottenham Dalmatian is a perfect introduction to quirky home décor. Inspired by the distinctive markings of Dalmatian dogs, this design captures a love of animals through painterly, irregular spots. It’s light-hearted without feeling over the top, making it a great starting point for anyone exploring quirky interior design.

Choose from a palette of warm Cocoa brown or light Ginger. This print also works beautifully as a cushion, making it a simple way to introduce quirky home accessories that bring character and fun into your space.

A cozy living room features a pink sofa with patterned cushions and a blanket. A large monochrome portrait hangs on a dark wall. Nearby, floor-length patterned curtains frame a glass door with a garden view. A wooden coffee table displays books and decor. Houseplants add greenery.

2. Storytelling through design

Money Tree is a lovely example of how storytelling shapes every Poodle & Blonde design. Inspired by a childhood tale, it weaves imagination into the everyday. The design features bamboo branches adorned with delicate hanging coins.

Playful storytelling sits at the heart of quirky interior design - the kind that sparks conversation and adds a unique layer to your home. As blinds or curtains, Money Tree in shades Bamboo or Valentine, becomes a standout feature.

  • "Money Tree is inspired by the tale of my grandfather, who would trick his grandchildren into believing that money really did grow on trees!"

Whinnie Williams - Creative Director at Poodle & Blonde

A decorated room features a patterned pink window blind, surrounded by a dressing table with lamps, a clothes rack, a mirror, and a chair with cushions, against warm-colored walls.

3. Chinoiserie patterns

Food Babies embraces the unexpected in the most delightful way. Taking the classic story of a stork delivering babies, it reimagines the idea with tiny takeaway parcels - a playful twist that instantly brings character to a room.

The design itself is rich in detail, inspired by traditional chinoiserie. This is what quirky home décor ideas are all about - taking something familiar and giving it a fresh, imaginative spin. In Blossom or Ivory, it works especially well in cosy spaces where you can really enjoy its detail.

  • “We love to make things feel nostalgic yet new and each of our fabrics is inspired by a strong narrative, that will last and be loved for a lifetime.”

Whinnie Williams - Creative Director at Poodle & Blonde

Curtains hang in front of glass doors, leading to a garden. A round table with chairs is nearby, and the room features plants, artwork, and wooden furniture.

4. Retro design influences

Tucson Lullaby places retro inspiration front and centre. Drawing on the patterns and textures of Americana, particularly cowboy blankets, it blends patchwork elements with a checkerboard layout. The result reflects the 70s influence that runs throughout the collection, reworked in a way that fits into modern homes.

It’s a perfect example of mixing references and creating something new.  Choose from shades Mirage, Motel, Rattlesnake and Saddle to bring personality to your windows.

  • "Each colour instantly injects a sense of texture and warmth, to bring your windows alive...Cowboy hats and boots optional!"

Whinnie Williams - Creative Director at Poodle & Blonde

5. Using bold geometry

If you’re looking to make a statement, Chain of Fools does exactly that. The interlocking hexagon design creates a strong, graphic pattern that immediately draws the eye. Inspired by 70s design, it has the confident feel that defines quirky home décor, softened by a flowing pattern.

In shades Mono or Valentine, this print is a great choice for a feature window. From there, you can build out with other textures and quirky home accessories to complete the look.

  • "Pair your curtains with a contemporary wave heading to elevate the space with a touch of 70s cool. The result? A fusion of modern style and retro vibes."

6. Textured design

Wyndham’s Rattan offers a more understated take on quirky home décor. Inspired by traditional rattan weaving, it has a hand-painted quality that brings warmth and texture. It’s a versatile design that works across different styles, from vintage-inspired spaces to more contemporary schemes.

Thanks to its soft pattern, it pairs effortlessly with bolder prints in the collection. This makes it ideal for layering, helping to balance stronger designs while still contributing to a cohesive, layered space.

  • “The fabrics in the collection have been designed to work together, so go for all out comfort with different patterns and shapes.”

Whinnie Williams and Kierra Campbell - Poodle & Blonde

Cactus stands in a black pot on a window sill, beside bird sculptures and books, against a leafy outdoor background. Nearby, art frames and a white hat rest on furniture.

7. Retro waves

Retro Wave brings a sense of movement into the home. Inspired by the flowing shapes of 60s and 70s design, its large-scale pattern creates a gentle rhythm across the fabric, with a vintage feel.

Whether used in a minimalist room or layered into a more eclectic scheme, Retro Wave in Pistachio or Sepia is a lovely way to introduce quirky interior design without overwhelming a space.

A bedroom features a bed with patterned pillows and a vintage phone, situated against pink walls with green blinds. A decorative chandelier hangs above, adding elegance to the setting.

8. A touch of 1970s glam

The 1970s print leans into the richness and depth of its era, bringing a slightly more polished take on quirky style. With its bold use of colour and confident pattern, it adds a sense of drama while still feeling warm and inviting.

Drawing inspiration from the Italian design scene, this fabric evokes a sense of effortless glamour, showing how prints can be playful and refined. As curtains or statement Roman blinds in shade Oceano, it has an elevated finish while staying true to the personality of the collection.

  • "Inspired by traditional marbling techniques, this design has a touch of timeless charm, with its imperfect scalloped rows adding layers of character and sophistication."

9. Mid-century retro

Micro Glaze offers a softer, more refined interpretation of retro design, with a look that quietly evokes mid-century cool. Inspired by the glazes used in West German pottery from the 60s and 70s, it features a smaller-scale geometric pattern that feels nostalgic. Its two-tone palette and hand-painted watercolour effect make it easy to style.

Micro Glaze works beautifully alongside bolder prints, helping to balance the look. In shades Dusty, Powder, Sepia and Umber, it works perfectly across curtains, Roman blinds and cushions, creating a cohesive scheme that feels put together.

Curtains with a spotted pattern hang by a large window, brightening a bedroom with a bronze bed frame. Decorative fans and a tiger picture adorn the wall.

A collection full of character

What really stands out in the Hillarys x Poodle & Blonde collection is the sense of story running through it. Every fabric has its own inspiration, yet together they’re designed to work beautifully.

With retro influences and playful ideas, quirky home décor feels fun and exciting. Whether you start with a statement blind or add a few carefully chosen accessories, it’s about building a space that feels warm, welcoming and completely your own.
