There’s something so inviting about a window seat – a little nook where you can tuck yourself away and let your thoughts wander. They’re a practical use of space too, turning an unused corner or awkward bay window into one of the most coveted seats in the house. From window dressings to seating options, here are some modern window seat ideas to get you feeling inspired.
A window seat can work brilliantly in any type of home. The key is to match the styling to the rest of the room so that it feels intentional, not added on as an afterthought.
This earthy colour-drenched living room shows how much impact the right window dressing can have. With light filtering through the honeycomb blind, it appears almost the same colour as the blush-pink sofa, connecting the two visually. Opting for a settee over built-in seating is a clever swap that suits the room’s elegant, period aesthetic.
Our second tip when creating a window seat is to think about how and when you’ll use it. Perhaps you long for a cosy corner to sit and read, or you need extra seating for guests.
Next, consider what you’ll want to have within easy reach. Adding a small side table, wall light or plug socket could make the space much more functional. With a handy countertop and a practical faux wood blind to filter the morning rays, this kitchen window seat is the perfect spot to enjoy the first tea or coffee of the day.
“I love our living room for its relaxing and calming atmosphere. It's where I can unwind, grab a book, enjoy a cup of coffee, and watch the world go by through the window.”

Anyone who’s searched for bay window seat ideas will know it can be tricky to find the right proportions for your space. If you don’t have an existing bench, settee or ottoman that will fit neatly into the bay, built-in banquette seating is a popular way to make the most of floorspace without leaving awkward gaps.
Depending on your budget (and DIY abilities) you could have bespoke seating fitted by a joiner, build your own or adapt an existing flatpack or piece of furniture to fit. Incorporate a hinged seat or sliding door panels, and you have some handy storage too.
This is the fun bit, and where you can really start to see the area coming together. Cushions, throws, curtains and blinds all soften hard lines to make a window seat look – and feel – cosy and comfortable.
This home office nook is a great example. The hanging chair, wooden textures and plants do some of the work, but it’s the Roman blind, cushions and throws that take the room from compact white box to inviting studio space.
We talk a lot about incorporating nature and the outside world into home design. What better place to do it than an indoor seat with an outdoor view?
If you’re lucky enough to look out onto a garden or open space, make the most of it by taking your cue from the colour palette outside. Greens, natural tones and botanical prints – like this Roman blind from our V&A William Morris collection – add warmth and visual interest without competing with the view.
A window seat is only part of the picture. The windowsill itself can help create an inviting look.
Small plants and succulents are an easy way to bring in colour and texture, while shells, rocks and other treasures collected on your travels can add a personal touch. These simple windowsill ideas can help connect your seating area with the view beyond.
“We love the bay window, so it was important to go for a window treatment that would enhance its look and make it stand out even more. It’s been few weeks since we had our shutters installed and I’m still totally blown away by what a difference they have made to this space.”

On a practical note, the space by the window can be cold and draughty in winter or uncomfortably warm in summer. The right window dressing makes a big difference.
Our honeycomb blinds, as seen in this modern kitchen, trap pockets of air to create an insulating layer. As well as helping to reduce heat loss, they’re also brilliant at filtering strong sunlight. Bay window shutters would make a good alternative in this space – they offer impressive insulation and precise control over light levels and privacy. They can also be made to fit all types of box, bow and bay windows.
There are lots of reasons why adding a window seat is a great idea. Whether you have a sweeping bay window or a modest alcove, clever use of seating and soft furnishings can turn it into one of the most-loved spots in your home.
