If you’re facing the challenge of choosing window dressings for a small room, the right curtains can make a world of difference. Clever styling tricks and thoughtful choices can create the illusion of height, width, and light, transforming a snug room into one that feels airy and inviting. Here’s how to make your room look bigger with curtains.

A plush green sofa with cushions sits on a patterned rug in a bright room. Large windows with floral curtains overlook a lush garden. Art decorates the walls.

Hang curtains high and wide

One of the easiest ways to make a room feel larger is to play with the proportions. Instead of fixing your curtain pole just above the window frame, position it closer to the ceiling. This draws the eye upward, which gives the impression of taller walls.

Likewise, extend the pole beyond the window width so your curtains can sit away from the glass when open. This maximises natural light and makes the window and the room appear bigger.

Choose light, airy fabrics

Heavy, dark fabrics can feel luxurious, but they tend to absorb light and make a space feel enclosed. For a brighter, more open look, opt for lightweight materials like voile or linen blends. These allow light to filter through while maintaining privacy, creating a soft, spacious feel.

Go for neutral or soft tones

Colour plays a big role in how we perceive space. Pale shades including whites, creams, and soft greys reflect light and make walls recede visually. If you love pattern, choose something subtle and tonal rather than bold and busy, which can overwhelm a small room.

  • “We live in a terraced house, so we’re working with a lot of small spaces so in my box room home office, I’ve kept things neutral so as not to overwhelm the space.”

Embrace floor-length curtains

Short curtains can visually chop up your room, making it look and feel smaller. Floor-length styles create a continuous line from ceiling to floor, elongating the space. Even if your window is small, full-length curtains add elegance and a little bit of luxe.

Curtains cover a large window, adorned with a delicate leaf pattern. A wooden dining table with plates and glasses sits nearby, surrounded by a light, airy living room setting.

Go vertical with patterns

If you’re a fan of patterned curtains, you might think they’re a no-go in small rooms, but not so; vertical stripes are your best friend. They guide the eye upward, enhancing the feeling of height. Make sure that you keep the palette soft and harmonious for a look that’s stylish yet spacious.

Layer with sheers

For a designer finish, layer sheer curtains behind heavier drapes. This adds depth without bulk and gives you flexibility; sheers for daytime light, drapes for evening cosiness. The layered look feels luxurious while keeping the room light and open.

Don’t forget the hardware

Slim, streamlined poles and discreet tracks help maintain a clean look. Bulky hardware can dominate a small space, so choose finishes that complement your décor without stealing the spotlight. And if you’re a fan of finials, keep it sleek and simple with co-ordinating ends.

Curtains aren’t just a finishing touch, they’re a powerful tool for shaping how your room feels. By hanging them high, choosing light fabrics, and keeping colours soft, you can create a space that feels bigger, brighter, and beautifully balanced.
