Rustic revival: the naturally elegant trend for a warm rustic house

Rustic interior design is one of my favourite ways to bring warmth, character and a sense of calm into my home.

Rustic interior design is one of my favourite ways to bring warmth, character and a sense of calm into my home. It has a timeless appeal that works in every room. Here are 10 tips for bringing the rustic look to life in your house.

1. Start with wood

When I think of rustic interior design, I’m instantly drawn to the texture of wood. I love how woodgrain tells a story with natural imperfections that add authentic character. Whether it’s a chunky mantelpiece, a rustic side table or simple shelving, wooden elements make a rustic house feel warm, relaxed and lived in.

  • Wood is a versatile material to use in your home and is great if you want to add a rustic and traditional feel to any room.

2. Choose furniture to cherish

Rustic décor is all about individuality. I’m drawn to furniture that’s made from quality materials and crafted with skill. These items tend to age beautifully, last for years and feel completely unique – it’s why rustic homes have so much charm.

3. Pay attention to the details

The parts of my home I love the most are often the little rustic details. I have baskets of chopped wood in my living room simply for the texture and warmth they bring. I also love incorporating small handmade pieces – adding a simple carved bowl or wooden tray is a simple way to shift the mood of a space.

4. Bring rustic interior design into your kitchen

My kitchen is full of pieces that add warmth and character. I keep plants in terracotta pots on homemade timber shelving and display my well-used chopping boards on the worktop instead of hiding them away. Pretty wooden brushes and handmade ceramics give the kitchen that earthy farmhouse feel that’s practical too.

Window seat with green cushions overlooks plants through a large window with a green shade. Nearby, a swing chair and a desk with plants and books complete the cozy room.

5. Use texture to enhance a room

The living room is the one space in my home that benefits most from texture. I mix woven baskets, solid wood pieces and chunky throws to create depth and softness. Lamps provide soft lighting and keep everything cosy and welcoming. I especially love my textured Roman blinds from Hillarys, which help anchor the space with a tactile, layered feel.

6. Create calm, restful spaces

A rustic house should feel calm and comfortable. In the bedroom, I start with linen or cotton bedding, add a textured throw and finish with a wooden stool or bench at the end of the bed. At the windows, I recommend textured Roman blinds or linen effect curtains to keep the bedroom feeling cosy and considered.

7. Soften hard spaces

Bathrooms can sometimes feel cold, so I focus on adding natural warmth. Wall panelling instantly changes the feel of the room, while wooden stools, woven baskets and ceramic pots make the space more inviting. Amber glass bottles and dried stems contribute to the rustic look I love.

8. Start with what you already have

Rustic décor doesn’t have to be expensive. I usually start with what I already have – old wooden utensils, chopping boards and baskets all add natural character. Rustic interior design isn’t about buying new things; it’s about appreciating the materials that already hold warmth and history.

9. Experiment in low-pressure ways

If you’re curious about rustic décor but want to ease in gently, small changes are ideal. A linen cushion cover, a terracotta pot, a wooden tray or even an earthy home fragrance can shift the feel of a room. It’s a relaxed way to get a feel for the rustic trend.

10. Choose natural fabrics

I tend to gravitate towards natural fabrics when it comes to window dressings. Linen effect curtains feel effortlessly cosy, while Roman blinds offer a refined look that suits rustic interiors – especially when they’re made from textured or woven fabrics that add softness and depth.

Find comfort in rustic style

Rustic interior design will always have a place in my home. Whether it’s a kitchen layered with ceramics, a textured living room or a peaceful bedroom, the style brings warmth and authenticity into everyday spaces. That’s the true power of rustic décor – it makes a home feel meaningful and lived-in.
