At Country Living, we spend a great deal of time thinking about how our homes connect us to the outdoors. Whether you have a large rural garden or a small urban patio, these spaces offer the simple, restorative pleasure of being outside.

This belief is what makes our new awning collection with Hillarys such a natural fit.

Hillarys has a real understanding of how to design awnings that look and work beautifully – that are thoughtfully engineered, genuinely stylish, and built to make outdoor spaces more liveable across the seasons.

We brought our own perspective to the partnership – one shaped by a deep appreciation for country-inspired living.

Together, we’ve explored ways to use patio awnings that focus not on trends alone, but on how our outdoor spaces make us feel - relaxed, grounded and restored.

Seven patio awning ideas

Below are some of my favourite patio cover ideas, inspired by the collection and by the way many of us want to live outdoors.

1. Use a patio awning to create an outdoor room

One of the simplest but most transformative patio awning ideas is to think of it not as an accessory, but as a way to define space.

Awnings create a sense of enclosure, drawing the eye, framing the space and giving it intention and purpose. What was once just an open patio becomes something more – an outdoor room with its own character.

The proportions of a Hillarys awning make a significant difference here. When an awning is beautifully scaled – neither too generous nor too modest for the space beneath it – everything feels more considered.

Whether used above a dining table, a seating area or a pair of chairs, a well-chosen patio cover helps anchor the furniture and gives the space a clear identity – somewhere that invites you to sit and linger.

2. Choose colours that blend naturally

Colour plays a really important role when choosing an awning. In the Country Living collection, we were drawn to muted tones that sit comfortably within the landscape rather than competing with it.

Natural greens allow planting, textures and seasonal colour to shine. One of my personal favourites is the deep green Pique Cedar - a fabric that feels as though it belongs among foliage. It’s timeless, too, which matters when choosing something you’ll live with for many years.

This approach to colour works equally well in town and country gardens, helping outdoor spaces feel calm, cohesive and naturally in tune with their surroundings.

3. Make comfort a priority

A patio only works if you want to use it, so comfort should always come first. Arrange seating to encourage conversation, add cushions generously and introduce softness with throws and outdoor rugs. Textiles are often overlooked outside, yet they instantly make a space feel lived in and cosy.

Lighting is equally transformative. As the light fades, strings of outdoor lights, lanterns or softly glowing lamps create atmosphere and help extend the evening. Beneath an awning, these layers come together beautifully, making the patio feel sheltered and intimate.

4. Think seasonally

While shade is perhaps the most obvious benefit of a patio awning, its greatest quality is its versatility. In summer, a well-positioned awning keeps outdoor spaces cool and comfortable through the brightest part of the day.

In cooler months, they offer shelter and create a reassuring sense of cover even when the weather gives you every excuse to stay in.

There's something quite wonderful about sitting out on a crisp winter morning with a warm cup of tea, watching the garden in its quieter season.

It's just as pleasurable, in its own way, as a long summer evening with a chilled glass of wine and the last of the daylight fading slowly overhead.

A good patio awning makes both possible.

5. Create flow between indoors and outdoors

The most successful patio spaces feel like a natural extension of the home. To achieve this sense of flow, think about how your eye moves from inside to outside.

Position your patio cover so it aligns with doors or key sightlines, allowing the outdoor area to feel connected rather than separate. Choosing an awning fabric that complements the colours or textures of your blinds or curtains also helps create continuity.

This visual connection is central to the idea of the garden as the ‘fifth room’ - an outdoor space designed with the same care as the rooms inside the home.

6. Invest in your patio for everyday living

We’re seeing more homeowners treat their outdoor spaces with the same intention as their interiors - investing in comfort, functionality and atmosphere. Modular seating, generous dining tables and quality materials are increasingly popular, alongside integrated lighting, heating and overhead structures.

Rather than feeling over-styled, the most successful patio awning ideas are those that support how people genuinely want to live outdoors. A well-designed patio cover allows for entertaining, relaxing and quiet moments, all within the same space.

7. Keep small patios simple and considered

Even the smallest outdoor areas can feel special. With limited space, restraint is key. Choose one or two elements you truly love to arrange beneath your awning – a particularly comfortable chair is always a good choice, so too are plants grown in pots at different heights to add life and softness without crowding the space.

Herbs, vegetables and fragrant climbers thrive wherever they’re encouraged, proving that a connection with nature doesn’t require a large garden.

Why a patio awning makes such a difference

A patio awning does far more than provide shade. It frames space, enhances comfort and supports a slower, more intentional way of living outdoors.

Our collection with Hillarys has been designed with this philosophy in mind - offering patio cover ideas that feel timeless, natural and quietly transformative. At its heart, it’s about making outdoor spaces feel as welcoming as the rooms inside your home.
