Frequently asked questions

Pricing and payment

How much do your blinds cost?

As all our blinds are made-to-measure we cannot provide you with an accurate quote over the phone.

If you book an appointment with one of our advisors they will be able to measure up and provide a quote for you. During the appointment there will be no pressure to buy, and your advisor won't overstay his or her welcome either; average appointment times are around 45 minutes.

The time varies depending upon the type and number of products you’re interested in. If you are looking for blinds for an entire conservatory, your appointment will take longer. However, if you need one simple Roller blind for a bathroom, it may be much quicker.

From time to time, you can take advantage of our multi-blind discounts. When you order more than one blind in selected fabrics from our ranges of Roller, Roman, Venetian, Faux Wood or Vertical blinds, you make great savings. Keep an eye on our website and social media, or ask your advisor for more information at your appointment.

Don’t forget, our great value prices include our expert measuring fitting service, and our Hillarys Price Promise means that we won’t be beaten on price for similar products.

How much deposit will I have to pay?

A deposit of up to 100% will need to be paid when you place your order, depending on the value of the order.

What is the Hillarys Price Promise?

It is our guarantee that we will not be beaten on price. We promise that if you find the same blind, in the same size and with the same specification and service, at a cheaper price, we will refund the difference. See our terms and conditions  for full details.

Are Hillarys’ products expensive?

When you order from Hillarys you don’t just get beautiful blinds, shutters, curtains, and awnings, made to fit perfectly. Our great value prices include our expert measuring and fitting service so you’ll also get the best advice on the perfect solution to transform your space and suit your budget.

Trends and Inspiration

What type of product can I get to fit my odd shaped window?

Pleated blinds can be made to almost any shape and used in roof windows too, making them a popular choice for conservatories and glass extensions. Vertical blinds can be made to fit sloped windows. Shutters are available to fit shaped, feature windows for example arched windows.

What type of product would be best for my bathroom?

You need to take extra consideration when choosing a window dressing for your bathroom. With hot showers and baths running, it is often a humid space that has special requirements. Our range of PVC Vertical blinds is perfect for the bathroom. They are water resistant, which makes them ideal in steamy environments and they are simple to clean too - just give them a wipe. Consider our Wood Illusions range if you like the look of real wood but want a reliable product for this environment that will not warp. We have recently introduced a waterproof range of shutters called Henley, specifically designed with bathrooms and wetrooms in mind.

Which type of blinds are best for my conservatory?

Our range of Pleated blinds includes special performance fabrics with sun reflective backings. These have been cleverly designed to help to keep the temperature down in the warmer summer months while retaining the heat once it starts to get cooler. Pleated blinds are ideal for the roof of your conservatory as they can be made to fit the different shaped windows. For the sides you can opt for more Pleated in a co-ordinating or contrasting colour, or choose from our full range of blind types.

My conservatory becomes quite cold during the winter. Have you any suggestions for ways of keeping it warmer?

Blinds can really help get rid of the chill in your conservatory. Not only do they look cosy but they have a practical advantage too. Our range of Pleated blinds includes specialist fabrics that help to retain the heat. You can fit Pleated into your roof and then choose from our full range of blinds for around the sides. Fully-lined Romans look warm and when pulled down, block out the outside world completely.

I have a bay window at the front of my house. What sort of product would you recommend?

Shutters look beautiful in a bay window, enhancing this lovely feature rather than hiding it.

Alternatively blinds can be fitted in a bay - Verticals can be made with a curved headrail to follow the shape of the bay. Or choose to have one blind fitted at each window - as our blinds are made-to-measure the end result should be seamless. Curtains look great in bay windows; and our tracks can be fitted to follow the shape.

I have a very sunny living room – around mid afternoon, the sun comes round and I get full sunlight in the room until it sets. This can make it blindingly bright, what would you suggest?

It would be a good idea to choose a blind that filters the light. There are several options. Vertical and Venetian blinds, including our Wood Venetian options, can be tilted to prevent direct sunlight shining into your room. Pleated blinds are available in a range of sheer fabrics that create a lovely glow at the windows. Shutters are another great product - tilt the louvres to allow the light in while preventing direct sunlight causing a problem

I like the idea of a blind but don’t want to lose the luxurious feel of a curtain.

It sounds as though you would like a Roman blind. Made from the same soft fabrics as curtains and fully-lined too, they bring a luxurious feel to your windows.

I have a Victorian house with the original sash windows that I love. I don’t want to cover up this feature. What would you suggest?

Elegant shutters are a brilliant solution for your windows. They have timeless looks that would suit your property perfectly and are practical too - blocking out the light when closed but opening fully to allow a clear view of your feature windows as well as the outside world.

My sitting room is below street level and looks out onto a passageway where the bins are stored. What can I do?

An unsightly view is best handled with a well-fitted blind. You probably want to maximise what little light you get into your room so consider a Wood Venetian blind or a Venetian or Vertical blind. These can be tilted to allow the light in while blocking the view at the same time.

Which type of blinds are best for my conservatory?

Pleated blinds have been designed specifically with conservatories in mind. They can be tailored to fit the different shaped windows so often found in conservatory roofs and they are available in a range of performance fabrics that help to keep the temperature down in the summer months while retaining the heat once it starts to get cooler. For the sides consider more Pleated blinds, including those fitted into a Perfect Fit frame that doesn't require drilling or screwing. The blinds become an integral part of the window, which means the window can be opened while the blind is closed - great for those really warm days.

Do you offer devices for my home to keep blind operating cords out of the reach of children?

Yes - on your fitting day, your advisor will take care of installing a child safety device for you, as required by law. If you have chosen standard Roman, Venetian, Wood Venetian or free-hang Pleated blinds, this will be a cleat for the controls to be wrapped around. Or if you have plumped for Roller, Vertical or deluxe Roman blinds, this will be a hook to keep the controls taut. Cordless options such as our Perfect Fit, Luxury Roller, Tab Pleated, Day & Night Transition™ and Trilite blinds do not require a child safety device as they are inherently safe by design.

We also offer free child safety devices for blinds which have already been fitted - even if you didn’t buy from Hillarys. To find out more and order your free devices visit www.makeitchildsafe.co.uk.

How do I dispose of electronics from Hillarys products?
Some of our products, such as Electric blinds and Awnings, are motorised and therefore use electronic systems to function. If these motorised systems are no longer wanted, you can recycle them rather than throwing them away. Visit our Electronic and Electricals Recycling page to learn more.

Energy saving solutions

Can motorised blinds help reduce heat loss?

You can program Electric blinds to open automatically in winter when the sun comes up and let it warm up your room. You can also set them to close before dusk to help trap the heat inside.

How can I keep my home warmer in winter?

Windows can account for up to 20% of heat loss in a home. Our made-to-measure window dressings can help you to reduce this heat loss by trapping a layer of air between the fabric and the glass, and help to regulate the temperature in your home all year round. Layering blinds, curtains, and shutters can further help to reduce your heat loss.

Can Blackout blinds help keep my room comfortable?

In summer, Blackout blinds can help keep your home cooler by reducing the amount of heat that enters your room through your windows. During the cooler months, Blackout blinds can also help to reduce energy loss through your windows and keep your home cosier.

How can Thermal blinds reduce my heat loss?

Our cleverly designed Thermashade™ Pleated blinds are made up of innovative honeycomb-shaped cells, which create an insulating layer at your window. These will help to keep your space at a comfortable temperature all year round. They're a practical solution that are available in beautiful colours.

Which window dressings will help reduce my heat loss?

We have many solutions to help you reduce your heat loss, which not only look cosy, but also have practical benefits too. These include beautiful made-to-measure blinds, luxurious lined curtains and our stunning range of stylish shutters. We also offer performance fabrics which will help to keep the precious heat inside your home.

Your local advisor will be delighted to collaborate with you and help you choose the best solutions to keep your home at a more comfortable temperature, and will bring our full range to show you at your in-home appointment.

What types of window dressings will help keep my conservatory warmer in winter?

As conservatories contain many windows, the amount of heat lost through them may be considerable. Reduce this heat loss by choosing our made-to-measure window dressings which fit closely to your window, helping to eliminate draughts and trap heat. Your local advisor will give you expert advice at your in-home appointment to find the best solution for you, your space and your budget.
